$1.33 Billion Powerball Jackpot Won by Single Ticket In Oregon
April 8, 2024 Diverse
A Powerball ticket sold in Oregon matched all six winning numbers on Saturday night, walking away with a staggering Powerball Jackpot of $1.326 billion – the fourth-largest in the game's history. This surpasses the initial estimate of $1.3 billion, making it the eighth-largest U.S. lottery jackpot ever.
The winning numbers were 44, 27, 52, 22, 69, and the red Powerball 9. The lucky winner has the option of receiving the full amount in an annuity spread over payments or a one-time lump sum of $621 million, before taxes.
This marks the end of a lengthy jackpot run, the longest in recent memory according to Powerball officials. The previous winner emerged on New Year's Day, with a ticket sold in Michigan claiming $842.4 million.
Record-Breaking Powerball Jackpot
While this Oregon win is impressive, it doesn't quite dethrone the top contenders. The largest Powerball jackpot, and the biggest U.S. lottery prize ever awarded, still belongs to a California ticket holder in November 2022, with a historic $2.04 billion win. Following closely are two other California jackpots: $1.765 billion in 2023 and a shared $1.586 billion prize in 2016.
Additional Winners and Drawing Details
Saturday's drawing was delayed for over three hours due to one lottery participant requiring extra time for pre-draw procedures. Despite the delay, the excitement didn't wane, with seven other tickets across Arizona, Delaware, Florida, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, and Wyoming matching five white balls to secure $1 million prizes each.
Powerball Basics
Winning the Powerball jackpot requires matching all five white balls drawn from a pool of 69, along with the single red Powerball number from 1 to 26. The odds of winning any prize are 1 in 24.9, while the coveted jackpot boasts odds of 1 in 292.2 million.
Powerball tickets cost $2 each and are available for purchase in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. ET in Tallahassee, Florida.
