Balearic Islands: New alcohol ban in Majorca and Ibiza
May 13, 2024 World
In a move to curb raucous tourist behavior, the Balearic Islands government has implemented a new decree targeting nightlife in popular areas of Majorca and Ibiza.
The legislation prohibits the sale of alcohol between 9:30 pm and 8:00 am in designated "excessive tourism" zones, including Llucmajor, Palma, Calvia (Magaluf) in Majorca, and Sant Antoni in Ibiza. Additionally, party boats are banned from sailing within one nautical mile of these areas and cannot pick up or drop off passengers there.
This new measure builds upon a 2020 law that already restricted happy hours, pub crawls, and two-for-one drink deals, alongside limitations on party boat advertising and nighttime alcohol sales in shops.
The stricter regulations aim to address concerns about rowdy tourist behavior, with authorities empowered to issue fines ranging from €750 to €3,000 for disruptive public drinking. The Balearic government has allocated €16 million for enforcement, security, inspections, and tourist awareness campaigns in these designated zones.
Palma Mayor Jaime Martínez highlighted the initiative's focus on promoting responsible tourism and correcting disruptive behavior. The decree is set to expire on December 31, 2027, with the hope that these efforts will establish a more sustainable tourism model for the islands.
