February 13, 2024

Gothenburg, Sweden (February 12, 2024) - A devastating fire ripped through the under-construction Oceana water park in Gothenburg on Monday, reducing several planned waterslides and facilities to ashes. Dramatic footage captured by onlookers showed flames engulfing the structures, sending thick plumes of smoke over the city.

The blaze, which reportedly began with an explosion at one of the water rides, quickly spread throughout the building, destroying multiple slides - including one boasting a 43-foot drop - slated to open in the coming months. Witnesses reported hearing at least three explosions as debris from nearby structures rained down on the inferno.

The $10.6 million Oceana water park had been slated to open this summer.

Flames Engulf Water Slides, Investigation Underway

"The fire started at one of the water rides outside the building and then spread to the entire building," confirmed Liseberg amusement park in a statement.

The police have filed a report of a missing person. A total of 16 individuals have sought medical care for minor injuries, all have left the hospital.

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire. A subcontractor was reportedly performing installations at the site when the blaze erupted. The park, which represents a major expansion for Liseberg - one of the largest amusement parks in the Nordic region - is now facing significant delays and potential reconstruction costs.
