Big Sur, CA - A section of California's iconic Highway 1 along the Big Sur coast collapsed into the ocean over the weekend, following a landslide event. Officials are calling it a "slip out" where part of the cliff face gave way.
California's Highway 1 Will Remain Closed
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) District 5 confirmed the closure on Sunday evening. The affected stretch of Highway 1 will remain closed for repairs and stabilization efforts, according to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office. Essential travelers can expect delays as they will be escorted through the closed area in convoys for "the next several days."
The National Weather Service (NWS) San Francisco Bay Area reported the landslide occurred around 4:00 pm local time on Saturday.
All State Parks Are Closed
As a precautionary measure, California State Parks has closed all state parks in the immediate vicinity of the collapse. This includes Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, Andrew Molera State Park, Limekiln State Park, Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, and Point Sur State Historic Park. Park officials have assured that those with camping reservations will receive a full refund.
