A Life Filled with Passion and Inspiration

Born in Queens, New York in 1921, Apfel's passion for design began early. She developed a keen eye for textiles and vintage finds, which she later translated into a successful career as an interior designer alongside her husband, Carl Apfel.

Their company, Old World Weavers, provided textiles for prominent clients like Estée Lauder, Greta Garbo, and even the White House. Apfel's influence extended beyond interior design as she became a cultural icon in her later years.

An Unconventional Rise to Fashion Stardom

In her 80s, Apfel's unique style gained wider recognition after a landmark exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, "Rara Avis (Rare Bird)." This was the first time the museum had dedicated such an exhibition to a non-designer, solidifying Apfel's status as a fashion icon.

Apfel embraced her newfound fame, collaborating with brands like Kate Spade and MAC Cosmetics, and even securing a modeling contract with IMG at the age of 97. Despite her success, she remained true to her core values, prioritizing self-expression and individuality over trends or labels.

A Legacy of Boldness and Self-Acceptance

Iris Apfel's life and work continue to inspire individuals worldwide. Her unwavering confidence, love for color and unique finds, and dedication to living life to the fullest serve as a lasting legacy.
