March 12, 2024 World
Zermatt, Switzerland - A search and rescue operation in the Swiss Alps concluded with the tragic discovery of five skiers deceased, while the search for a sixth member of the group continues.
Local authorities reported that the group comprised five members of the same family from the Valais canton and another individual from Fribourg.
Challenging Conditions Hamper Rescue:
The skiers, who had set out from the popular resort town of Zermatt on Saturday, went missing in the Tête Blanche region. Harsh weather conditions, including a significant avalanche risk and a storm, hampered rescue efforts.
Police said they were alerted by a family member who was meant to collect the group in the village of Arolla on Saturday afternoon and had become concerned when they failed to arrive.
Search Efforts Launched:
Despite the perilous situation, a rescue team attempted to reach the group by land on Saturday night. However, worsening weather conditions forced them to turn back. A further attempt on Sunday by emergency services via helicopter was also unsuccessful due to the weather.
Authorities Share Details:
The deceased skiers belonged to the Valais canton and ranged in age from 21 to 58. The identity of the missing person and the remaining family members have not been disclosed by authorities.
Search Continues:
The search for the remaining missing individual is ongoing, with specialized units from the Cantonal Police, mountain rescue teams, and the Swiss Air Force collaborating in the efforts.
