Abu Dhabi Enacts Ban on Certain Polystyrene Foam Products
June 1, 2024 Middle East
In a move to curb plastic pollution, Abu Dhabi has begun enforcing a ban on specific polystyrene foam products, effective June 1, 2024. This initiative aligns with the emirate's broader strategy to reduce single-use plastics, as reported by WAM, the state news agency.
Targeted Restrictions Address Environmental Concerns
The ban targets single-use items made from expanded polystyrene, including cups, lids, plates, and beverage containers. It encompasses food containers used for immediate consumption, both on-site and for takeaway. Additionally, pre-packaged ready-to-eat meals that do not require further preparation, such as heating or cooking, will also be subject to the ban.
Exemptions Consider Practical Needs
Certain products are exempt from the ban, including multi-use items like large storage boxes and coolers. Additionally, trays used for retail sales of meat, fruit, and pre-made dairy products are excluded. Medical-grade polystyrene products are also exempt.
Environmental Protection and Public Health Drive the Policy
Shaikha Salem Al-Dhaheri, Secretary General of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), emphasized the environmental benefits of the ban. "Our goal is to minimize harmful microplastics entering the food chain, which can negatively impact human health, biodiversity, and our natural ecosystems," she stated.
Shaikha Al-Dhaheri further highlighted a balanced approach: "We've meticulously selected the Styrofoam products to be banned, ensuring business continuity and consumer convenience. All prohibited items have readily available alternatives."
Enforcement and Collaboration for Successful Implementation
The Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development will conduct field inspections to ensure the ban's enforcement across sales outlets and plastic manufacturing facilities.
This initiative builds upon the Abu Dhabi single-use plastic policy launched in 2020. In 2022, a successful ban on single-use plastic bags was implemented in collaboration with retailers. Furthermore, in 2023, EAD collaborated with the government and private sector to launch reverse vending machines for single-use plastic bottles, promoting a culture of recycling. Additionally, efforts were made to eliminate single-use plastics within government operations.
