Naples Sinkhole Swallows Cars, Passengers Escaped unharmed

February 22, 2024

NAPLES, ITALY Feb 21, 2024 – A dramatic scene unfolded in Naples' Vomero district on Wednesday morning when a sudden sinkhole devoured two cars with passengers inside. Luckily, thanks to the quick response of Italian soldiers and a stroke of luck, all passengers escaped the incident unharmed.

Video footage captured the moment of panic as the vehicles plunged into the chasm while water cascaded down. Initial investigations suggest a ruptured water leak triggered the collapse.

Giulio Delle Donne, a local councillor who was in one of the cars, recounted the harrowing experience to Fanpage news site. "The earth gave way and we found ourselves underground," he described, expressing gratitude to the nearby army patrol who pulled them to safety.

The incident caused significant damage, collapsing a tree and lamppost and flooding nearby apartments. Authorities promptly shut down the water supply and evacuated a nearby school and building as a precaution.

This comes only a month after another sinkhole emerged in Naples, highlighting concerns about the city's infrastructure. Mayor Gaetano Manfredi attributed the incident to years of neglected maintenance on the sewer system, emphasizing ongoing efforts to implement preventative measures and improve infrastructure upkeep.
