UAE announces midday break to start June 15
June 1, 2024 Middle East
Dubai, UAE - The United Arab Emirates' Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization (MoHRE) has announced the implementation of the annual midday break for outdoor workers, starting June 15 and lasting until September 15, 2024. This initiative marks the 20th year of the regulation, ensuring worker safety during the scorching summer months.
Mandatory Break Protects Workers from Extreme Heat
During the designated midday break period, from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm, all outdoor work across the UAE is prohibited. This regulation aims to safeguard workers from the health risks associated with working under direct sunlight and in high temperatures, which can reach up to 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit) or even higher.
Employer Responsibilities During Midday Break
The MoHRE emphasizes the importance of worker well-being and urges companies to provide essential amenities during the break. This includes shaded areas, proper cooling devices, sufficient drinking water, hydrating electrolytes and food items approved by local authorities, first-aid kits, and other necessary supplies at worksites.
Fines for Non-Compliance
Employers who fail to comply with the midday break regulations face fines of up to Dh5,000 (approximately $1,360) per worker, with a maximum penalty of Dh50,000 for repeated violations.
Exceptions to the Midday Break Rule
While the midday break is mandatory for most outdoor work, there are some exceptions. Essential projects with technical requirements, such as laying asphalt or pouring concrete for road construction, are allowed to proceed during the break period. Additionally, emergency work related to public well-being, including infrastructure maintenance and utility repairs, can be exempted upon obtaining a permit from the authorities.
Neighboring Kuwait also Implements Midday Break
It's noteworthy that neighboring Kuwait also enforces a similar midday break for outdoor workers. Their regulation, introduced in 2015, commenced on June 1 and mandates a break from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm for a duration of three months.
